Hello,
I'm new to this forum, so hope I've done this right!
I lived in Barnehurst for many years and my Father still lives there. When I was younger I went to Mayplace Primary School. In the grounds of the school the ruin of Oakwood House can be found at the end of Oakwood Drive. The house was apparently destroyed by bombing action in the 2nd World War and the derelict remains were gradually overcome by the woodland.
I am interested to try and discover some more about a story that has done the rounds for many years. The actress Ellen Terry who died in 1928 appeared in a silent movie entitled "Pillars of Society" in 1920. It is said that some of this film was shot at Oakwood House, but I have never been able to get to the bottom of this. It is said that Ellen Terry lived at the house at the time. If you search for details of the film you will discover that there were two versions - one shot on location in Norway and another which was a UK film. I'd love to find out for sure the full story and if any copies of the film or stills from it exist I'd love to see them.
Does anyone out there know anymore??
